December Newsletter

Dear Elementary Parents,
Wow! Can you believe it’s Thanksgiving already? It is so nice to see the students participating in classroom plays, making Paper Mache turkeys in art class, and studying about the history of Thanksgiving.
We are thankful for the Kline family and the effort that they have put into the Kachina Garden area. We are going to begin emphasizing healthy eating and organic foods to our students. The kids will also learn about a healthy way of living and different agricultural products. The garden has been generously sponsored by www.sunflowerocity.com. Please find attached, a letter regarding our new garden project from Chris Kline.
December is coming soon. Please see Important Dates below:
December 21 at 9:30AM – Christmas Program – All grades. Please see your teacher for details.
December 24 – January 4 – Holiday Break
Child care will be offered the second week of break. Contact the front office for more information or to sign up your child.
January 7 – OPEN ENROLLMENT to KCDS parents and siblings. Open enrollment to the public starts January 22.
As we begin into January, we would like to emphasize some changes in our after school enrichment programs. We are excited to announce that we will begin an Equestrian Program on campus. Details will be coming home soon after break.
Please remember School Dismissal is at 3:30PM. If you come to pick up your child earlier, please come to the office and sign your child out. Please refrain from knocking on the classroom door as it can interrupt valuable, classroom time.
Have a wonderful Holiday Season!
Kind Regards,
Janece Kline

Dear Parents,
The new children’s garden section was constructed by using a rented bob cat to remove the existing gravel and then using a rented power tiller to till in 75 cubic feet of coffee grounds that volunteers have been collecting from Starbucks over the last few months. Parents are welcome to get coffee grounds from their favorite Starbucks and drop them by the garden anytime. They will be put to good use along with other soil amendments that we are using. The new garden sections have been fenced and will have complete drip irrigation in the next few weeks.
Plants that you will find in the garden now include Garlic, Swiss Chard, Tomatoes, Carrots, Japanese Eggplant, Sweet Basil, Italian Basil, Broccoli and Peppermint. Limited additional planting will be done over the winter months and then in spring it will be time to really get busy.
Donations to the Garden project are always welcome and we will be having a huge plant and garden sale soon to help raise funds as well. We can also use donations of nice outdoor chairs or benches and small tables to place around the garden to make it a nice place for teachers and students to come for reading and outside study. As funds are available we will be adding many more ornamental trees and plants as well as many more food crops.
Teachers are welcome to stake claim to small sections in the garden for class plantings while other spaces will be professionally planted to grow produce that will be sold at local farmers markets to help fund the garden. The garden belongs to the school community and everyone is welcome to work in the garden and add whatever they think it needs!
I am often in the garden in the morning so stop by and say hi. I’d be happy to talk about any gardening questions you may have. Preschoolers often stop by in the morning and I enjoy showing them things that they can smell, touch and see in the garden.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks!
Chris Kline
